What to Expect on the Trek
From Briefing to Face-to-Face
7am Park Briefing
Trekkers gather at Kinigi park headquarters for a briefing and are assigned to a gorilla family based on fitness level and trekking preference.
The Trek Itself
Depending on where the family was last seen, the walk in can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours through forest and volcanic slopes.
One Hour With the Family
Once you reach the gorillas, you get a full hour to watch and photograph them at a safe distance, accompanied by trackers and armed rangers.
Permit Price
Rwanda Gorilla Permit: $1,500 Per Person
Set by Rwanda Development Board, the permit covers park entry, an armed ranger and tracker team, and one hour with a habituated gorilla family. Visitors combining a trek with three or more days in Akagera or Nyungwe National Park qualify for a 30% discount, and conference guests extending their stay get 15% off. Gorillas Can Be Trekked Year-Round
The driest months — June to September and December to February — make for easier, less muddy trails. The rainy season (March–May, October–November) is quieter, with fewer trekkers on the trail and a greener forest, though the going underfoot is tougher.
